We are currently running a postcard campaign in the United States, and invite you to join us with the smallest effort and expense.
The aim is to send a continuous stream of postcards—signed by members of the public with a short personal message—to progressive individuals and groups who are already highlighting social injustices while calling for a fairer sharing of resources.
We hope that the recipients of the postcards – presently Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), and Rev. William Barber (the Poor People's Campaign) – will be motivated to directly engage with the cause of upholding Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This states that:
“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”
More about the campaign
These basic economic and social rights are being increasingly undermined in America and other countries throughout the world, where many people worry about:
- If they have enough money for groceries
- How to cover their basic needs with low wages
- How to pay for medical care and prescriptions
- The fact that they are one paycheck away from becoming homeless
We can bring hope to people living in poverty everywhere by mobilising around the rights of Article 25, which represents a unifying cause for social transformation that anyone can grasp and participate in. (See further resources below to learn more.)
The postcard initiative provides us with a simple method of sparking discussions with people about our far-reaching vision of peaceful, massive and continuous demonstrations on behalf of the least advantaged members of society.
A public discussion on Article 25 urgently needs to be brought into the political arena, and the only way to do that is through the power of the people. All the postcard recipients mentioned above already have much of America’s youth behind them, and are ready to fight for a better future where everyone enjoys a dignified and fulfilling life, with the basics guaranteed.
In due course, it may be that Article 25 is gradually popularised as a people’s slogan and cause, until activists begin to resurrect the United Nations radical vision for achieving socioeconomic rights worldwide.
How you can join
Currently the postcard campaign is only running in America, but we may expand it to other countries as more people get involved.
Please contact us directly to express your interest, and we will put you in touch with our co-workers in America who will send you a pack of postcards (of your specified amount) with addresses already printed.
Once you receive the postcards, you can ask people to sign them with a short message and mail each one as you go along. You may start with family and friends in your social networks, seek interest at relevant events, or even approach people on the street—we are also happy to give you additional ideas!
We already have a dedicated team in the States that are involved and it would be great if you can join them. Even if you don’t live in America, perhaps you can pass on the word to others through your networks, or perhaps you will be interested in starting a postcards campaign in your own country. Every person and every postcard counts!
