Share The World's Resources: A panel event at Cambridge University

Share The World’s Resources is teaming up with Cambridge Homeless Outreach Programme and Cambridge University Amnesty International to outline the case for achieving the United Nation's longstanding vision of "better standards of life in larger freedom".  

The talk will focus on the reality of extreme poverty across the world, and the need for governments to uphold Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which proclaims the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living. We aim to stimulate discussion about the importance of fulfilling economic and social rights in the UK and across the world.

This event is ideal for anyone passionate about equality and eager to gain a greater insight into human rights activism, consulting work at the UN, sustainable and equitable development.

At Cambridge University Amnesty International and Cambridge Homeless Outreach Programme, we believe everyone has the right to an adequate standard of living, therefore we hope through teaming up with STWR we can help learn more about what we can do as engaged citizens to protect this right.

We consider this event extremely important, as in 2018 Philip Alston, the UN’s rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, declared that levels of child poverty in the UK were “not just a disgrace, but a social calamity and an economic disaster”. Figures from the IFS and Joseph Rowntree Foundation indicate that child poverty could rise to a rate of 40% by 2022. Austerity Britain was in breach of four UN human rights agreements relating to women, children, disabled people and economic and social rights. Moreover, about 14 million people, a fifth of the population, live in poverty and 1.5 million are destitute, being unable to afford basic essentials. Therefore, we at CUAI and CHOP feel it is essential that we team up STWR to discuss practical solutions to addressing devastating inequality in the UK as well as across the globe.
